During the planning stages of the carousel, Kingsport officials promised to create a playground in the fenced-in greenspace adjacent to the roundhouse. For a couple of years now, the space has simply been a passive park — just some flat land with a few benches and picnic tables.
But this past July, a construction crew began clearing the space and prepping it for a playground. Last week, all of the playground equipment arrived, with the first piece — a tree-house style platform with slides and climbing features — already in place.
On Monday, workers were preparing to install a large, red spinner. A tunnel and musical area are coming later this week. Then, when all of the equipment has gone in, another company plans to come in and install the rubber flooring throughout the new playground.
Total cost of the project is $288,000. Here’s a list of everything that’s going in:
- Web crawler
- Inclusive spinner
- Crawl tunnel
- Stepping pods
- Tree house structure with slide, bridge and climber
- Music area with congas, chimes and vibes
