Celebrate Earth Day by helping clean up Bays Mountain Park

KINGSPORT — What better way to celebrate Earth Day than by spending a few hours at Bays Mountain Park, working side by side with other volunteers to help clean up some trails in and around the Nature Center.

If that sounds like something you’re interested in, then come up to Bays Mountain on April 19 and join park staff in an Earth Day Cleanup. The event is a partnership with Keep Kingsport Beautiful and its annual Clean Sweep Kingsport initiative.

The cleanup will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with volunteers working along three trails: Lakeside (2.75 miles), Lake Road (4.4 miles), and Fire Tower Trail (a round-trip hike of 2.88 miles).

GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY

Spending time cleaning up the environment and giving back to the community is the perfect way to celebrate this planet we call home.

“What makes this year so different is, with the amount of rain over the past year, we’re seeing heavy numbers (of visitors) on the weekends, and that tells us that folks clearly want to get outside,” said Rob Cole, park manager. “As they have, this has increased the traffic on our trails. Of course, those same rains created so much erosion on various trails, and that will only add to the cleanup efforts.”

In addition to collecting any trash and debris they find, volunteers will be doing some very minor touch-up work to help improve the trails. More in-depth repairs and improvements will be made at a later time.
