BURLINGTON, N.C. — Anderson Bohorquez launched a tiebreaking, two-run home run and the Kingsport Mets survived a ninth-inning push by the Burlington Royals to pick up a 4-3 Appalachian League win on Tuesday night at Burlington Athletic Stadium.
Bohorquez’s homer, which put the K-Mets up 3-1 in the top of the seventh, followed a two-out walk to Cristopher Pujols.
Kingsport (5-3) produced an important insurance run in the eighth. Scott Ota banged out a leadoff triple and Jaylen Palmer drew a one-out base on balls before Andres Regnault hit into an RBI fielder’s choice, making it a 4-1 game.
Burlington (5-3), though, had something left in the ninth. After back-to-back outs were sandwiched by Logan Porter getting hit by a pitch and Kevon Jackson’s walk, a passed ball moved the runners into scoring position.
Rafael Romero stroked a two-run single to center and Jack Gethings followed with a single to put the tying run at second. Following a mound visit, however, Jender De Jesus struck out Mikey Filia to extinguish the rally and pocket his first save.
Christopher Dominguez (1-0) threw two shutout innings in relief of starter Cesar Loaiza, who was lifted after four innings. Brendan Hardy failed to yield a run over 1 1/3 innings, then turned over the ball to De Jesus for the final five outs.
Each team was limited to five hits. Ota, the only player with multiple hits, went 2-for-4.
The teams meet Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the rubber game of the series. The Royals took Monday’s series opener 7-4.
