Prep Roundup: Fremont girls basketball clinches Region 1 outright, beats Layton

PLAIN CITY — Freshman Emma Calvert scored 19 points Friday to lead Fremont girls basketball to a 53-36 win over Layton, clinching the Region 1 crown outright for Fremont.

Halle Duft, Berkley Larsen and Haylee Doxey each scored seven points for Fremont (18-2, 11-0 Region 1).

Daisy Barker scored 14 to pace Layton (14-5, 8-3) and Brenda Gallegos added nine points.

BONNEVILLE 59, BEN LOMOND 40

WASHINGTON TERRACE — Bonneville took a 20-6 lead over Ben Lomond after the first quarter, then held the Scots to only two points in the second on the way to clinching at least a share of the Region 11 title.

Talia Afuvai and Mikaela Johnson tied for game-high honors with 13 points apiece for Bonneville (15-4, 10-0 Region 11). Karly Conolly added 11.

Taylor Abbott led Ben Lomond (3-14, 1-9) with 11 points and Hayden Abbott scored 10.

BOX ELDER 54, BOUNTIFUL 35

BRIGHAM CITY — Bountiful scored the first bucket of the game. Box Elder responded with an 20-1 run over the first and second quarters to take control in the region contest.

Emily Isaacson led Box Elder (11-10, 3-4 Region 5) with 16 points on three 3-pointers. Morgan Reeder added 12 points.

Dashani Purcell led Bountiful (2-18, 0-8) with nine points and Waverly Bowman scored eight.

WEBER 54, CLEARFIELD 49

CLEARFIELD — In a tight game, Weber led Clearfield 35-33 after the third quarter and held off the Falcons in the fourth quarter.

Bridget Triplett and Megan Smoot each scored 18 points to lead Weber (10-10, 4-7 Region 1).

Haylie Anderson led Clearfield (9-10, 4-7) with 13 points. Jill Thalman tallied 12 points and Kiersten Boyack added 10.

NORTHRIDGE 47, SYRACUSE 37

SYRACUSE — Northridge led by three points after three quarters, then outscored Syracuse 17-10 to secure the region road win.

Brooklyn Perkins and Abby Neff each scored nine points to lead Northridge (15-5, 6-5 Region 1).

Emily Thomas and Kedree Hamblin had eight points apiece for Syracuse (5-15, 1-11).

NORTH SUMMIT 67, UTAH MILITARY 19

COALVILLE — Utah Military trailed 42-13 at the half in the road loss at North Summit (16-6, 9-1 Region 16).

Raegan Furniss scored 14 points for Utah Military (1-15, 0-10), including four 3-pointers.

BOYS BASKETBALL

SKY VIEW 62, BEAR RIVER 59

SMITHFIELD — Bear River trailed by one at the half at Sky View, but the Bears were outscored 16-9 by the Bobcats in the decisive third quarter.

Mark Huber had 21 points to pace Bear River (14-6, 4-4 Region 12). Ren Fonnesbeck tallied 13, Jacob Olsen scored 11 and Jake Dahle added 10 points.

The loss puts the Bears in fourth place in Region 12.

BONNEVILLE 47, BEN LOMOND 32

WASHINGTON TERRACE — Bonneville outscored Ben Lomond 33-20 in the second half to pull away for the region victory.

Hank Bushell led Bonneville (8-11, 5-5 Region 11) with 21 points on five 3-pointers, 14 rebounds and two steals. Tyler Hancock added 11 points, eight rebounds and five steals.

Sudan Puk had 11 points and seven rebounds to lead Ben Lomond (2-17, 1-9). Andrew Ormond added 10 points.

The win, coupled with Ogden’s loss to Park City, gives the Lakers the Region 11 fourth seed going into the state tournament.

BOX ELDER 69, BOUNTIFUL 60

BRIGHAM CITY — Box Elder outscored Bountiful 19-10 in a pivotal second quarter to turn a one-point deficit into an eight-point halftime lead.

Tyson Madsen led Box Elder (11-6, 5-0 Region 5) with 22 points. Max Watson scored 12, while Ronnie Smith and Cameron Saunders each added 11.

Brig Willard scored a game-high 30 points for Bountiful (9-11, 3-3) before fouling out. Garrett Buchanan added 12 points.

WEBER 61, CLEARFIELD 53

CLEARFIELD — Clearfield led 26-25 at the half, but Weber outscored the Falcons 22-15 in the third quarter to take control.

Kobe Furqueron led Weber (11-7, 5-4 Region 1) with 23 points, including three consecutive 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. Hudson Schenck added 16 points.

Carter Buchi scored 19 to lead Clearfield (4-14, 0-9 Region 1).

LAYTON CHRISTIAN 90, ST. JOSEPH 43

LAYTON — Layton Christian ran away from St. Joseph in the second half, outscoring the Jayhawks 48-18 after the break.

Braxton Meah scored a game-high 18 points to lead LCA (16-8, 10-0 Region 16) and Sam Muller added 14. Micah Petty, Sano Gasana and Ben Cerda each score 10 points.

Harry Chen led St. Joseph (3-18, 2-8 Region 16) with 17 points and Gavin Andersen added 16.

MORGAN 67, JUDGE MEMORIAL 63

MORGAN — Morgan hit just enough free throws down the stretch to claim the win over Judge Memorial (3-18, 0-8 Region 13) and stay perfect in region action.

The Trojans took a 43-25 halftime lead, but Judge Memorial came back and tied the game at 57.

Trey Miles scored a game-high 30 to lead Morgan (19-2, 8-0). Laine Carter added 16 points.

NORTHRIDGE 70, SYRACUSE 69 (OT)

SYRACUSE — Northridge took a 31-22 halftime lead at Syracuse. The Titans responded with a big second half to force overtime, where the Knights prevailed.

Brock Gilbert led Syracuse (10-11, 5-5 Region 1) with 30 points on seven 3-pointers and Kingston Williams added 11. Austin Kirkman pulled down eight rebounds.

No scoring information was supplied for Northridge (10-10, 5-4 Region 1).

PARK CITY 64, OGDEN 48

OGDEN — Park City broke open a close game by outscoring Ogden 40-28 in the second half for the region road win.

Carson White scored 16 points to lead Ogden (4-16, 2-8).

VIEWMONT 80, ROY 38

BOUNTIFUL — Viewmont took a 43-13 halftime lead over Roy and coasted to the region victory.

Josh Mordue paced Viewmont (9-11, 4-2 Region 5) with 11 points while Spencer Mackay added 10.

Alex Lamb scored 11 for Roy (4-15, 1-5).

NORTH SUMMIT 60, UTAH MILITARY 30

COALVILLE — Utah Military Academy (2-16, 0-9 Region 16) fell to North Summit.

Joshua Burger, Jacob Ogden and Byron Rayo each scored six points to pace UMA.

PREP WRESTLING

Morgan High will have seven wrestlers competing in Saturday’s 3A wrestling state championship semifinals.

Joseph Mecham (106 pounds), Jarrett Jorgensen (120 pounds), Chris Payne (126), Isaac Ware (132), Antonio Nava (152), Chase Trussell (220, 52-0 record heading into Saturday’s semifinals) and Weston Stegelmeier (285) will all attempt to wrestle in Saturday night’s finals.

The Trojans were in third place in the team standings with 83 points after the first day of competition Friday.

In 4A, the Bear River trio of Scott Robertson (113 pounds), Kaygen Canfield (152) and Logan Pond (220) will also wrestle in the semifinals Saturday afternoon. Bonneville’s Austin Bush will also wrestle in the 106-pound weight class semifinals.
