Pioneers, Lady Titans fall in Region 1D openers

PILGRIMS KNOB — Twin Valley rode a 30-point effort from senior Trevor McGlothlin to a 65-61 overtime win over Thomas Walker on Monday in the opening round of the Region 1D boys basketball tournament.

The Panthers of the Black Diamond District rallied from a 31-20 halftime deficit to end the season for the Pioneers of the Cumberland District. Tylor Keen added 17 points for Twin Valley (13-12), which advanced to play Chilhowie on Tuesday in the quarterfinals. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

Logan Ely fired up 21 points to set the pace for Thomas Walker (7-19). Sophomore Caleb Yeary added 15 and Tucker Barton finished with 12.

Tuesday’s other Region 1D quarterfinals, each scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff, have John I. Burton playing at Honaker, Holston visiting Grundy and Eastside welcoming Northwood.

Council 56, Twin Springs 55

COUNCIL — Lakota Helton sank a free throw with 14.6 seconds remaining, and Council denied Twin Springs a spot in the Region 1D girls basketball quarterfinals by pulling out the opening-round win.

Brianna Ratliff was key in the Lady Cobras’ win, putting up a game-high 22 points.

Baylie Compton scored 14 points to lead a balanced effort for the Lady Titans (13-13). Aubrey Powers contributed 13 points and Lauren Duncan and Chloe Gilmer scored 12 apiece.

Council (15-9) advanced to a 7 p.m. quarterfinal matchup at Patrick Henry on Tuesday. The other quarterfinal games, all to tip off at 6 p.m., are Holston at Eastside, Chilhowie at Honaker and Thomas Walker at Grundy.
