Kay was born on September 16, 1937, in Dallas Center, IA. She graduated from Dallas Center High School and Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls, IA.
While attending college, she met and married the love of her life, Willard Gruis. They will celebrate their 58th wedding anniversary in November.
Willard's employment with Jetway Equipment Company led them from Iowa to Southern California and then to South Ogden, UT, where they settled and raised their family.
Kay taught 3rd grade at Roosevelt Elementary School in Washington Terrace, UT, for 25 years. During her career, she earned a Master's Degree in Education from Weber State University.
Kay is the mother of three children: Cindy (Derrick) LaPee, (Roy); Brian (Amy) Gruis, (Kaysville); and Steve (Rachael) Gruis, (North Ogden). She has four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Kay is a quilting fanatic and also enjoys reading and traveling. Kay and Willard have traveled the great rivers of Europe on river cruises to the Netherlands and Belgium, and traveled to Northern Europe, England, Australia and New Zealand.
She is also very involved as a longtime member of Community United Methodist Church in Washington Terrace, and is a member of PEO Chapter AA.
An open house hosted by her children will be held on Saturday, September 16, 2017, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Gruis residence, 769 Edgewood Drive in South Ogden, to celebrate this momentous occasion.
