VA-KY District Fair enters 106th year

WISE — The Shelcy Mullins Sr. Fairgrounds will come to life Monday with the 106th annual VA-KY District Fair bringing plenty of music, amusements, wrestling, demolition driving, equestrian events, rodeo, livestock, displays, the midway and carnival rides.

Gates open at 4 p.m. with the Auto World Demolition Derby at the fairgrounds Horse Arena starting at 7 p.m., and the Miss VA-KY District Fair Scholarship Pageant at 8 at the main stage.

On Tuesday, the gates open at 4 p.m. with the Wee Baby Pageant for contestants from newborn to 3 years and the Junior Pageant for contestants from 4 to 15 years.

Local legend has it that actor George C. Scott of “Patton” fame won the baby contest as a toddler.

Truck Drags start at 7 for the motorsports minded, and wrestling fans can head to the Horse Arena for Ricky Morton Pro Wrestling, also at 7.

Wednesday is Kids Day from noon to 6 p.m., with the fairgrounds opening at 11 a.m. Rodeo fans can watch SEBRA Bull Riding at the horse arena at 7, and music fans can go to the Main Stage for Amber Graham and Chris Mullins at 7 and Logan Mize at 8.

Senior Citizens Day highlights Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Horse Arena features more bull riding at 7, with ATV Racing also starting at 7. Music fans can head to the Main Stage for Brandon Osborne at 7 and Folk Soul Revival at 8.

Friday’s festivities start with gates opening at 4 p.m. The Horse Arena hosts the Livestock Show at 7, with Motocross Racing starting at 7:30. The Main Stage features Corey Harris at 7 and longtime country star Joe Diffie at 8.

Saturday brings the VA-KY District Fair to a peak with the second Kids Day from noon to 6 p.m. Gates open at 11 a.m., with free admission from 11 a.m. to noon and free rides from noon to 1 p.m. The Horse Show starts at 6, and comedienne Marge and In Charge performs at the Arts Building at 6. The Main Stage features local band The Fatty Livers at 6, followed by Hillbilly Jed.

Normal admission is $10 for ages 18 and older, $5 for ages 5-17 and free for ages under 5. Throughout the week, fairgoers can take advantage of one-price rides for $15 on June 3, ride specials on June 5 and 8 Kids Days, and one-price rides for $20 on June 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8.
