BIG STONE GAP — An 82-year-old woman was killed Friday when she pulled her car in front of an oncoming pickup, the Virginia State Police reported.

The VSP said Trooper B.K. Turner responded to a two-vehicle crash at 9:32 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. Route 58A and State Route 605, near the Lee County border close to an area known as the Strawberry Patch west of Big Stone Gap.

The VSP said a 2018 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup was traveling west on Route 58A when a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt pulled from Route 605 into the truck’s path. The driver of the pickup, a 36-year-old female from Dryden, was unable to avoid the Cobalt and struck it in the side.

The VSP said the deceased, Evelyn S. Meade of Big Stone Gap, was wearing a seat belt and died at the scene. The driver of the truck was also wearing a seat belt. She was treated at the scene for minor injuries. The crash remains under investigation.
