Theft charge against houseguest accused of stealing $11K dropped

KINGSPORT — The theft charge filed against a Hawkins County man accused of stealing $11,775 last year from an elderly man in poor health whom he lives with and assists was dismissed in October after the victim reportedly exonerated him in court.

On Oct. 6, John Alfred Franklin, 44, and his wife were arrested at an Oak Street residence in Kingsport on a theft warrant that was issued in June.

The theft allegedly occurred on Dec. 26, 2017, however, while the couple were staying in the apartment of Brad Parlier on Watterson Street in the Kingsport section of Hawkins County.

According to a KPD report, Franklin and Parlier then went to visit a friend in an nearby apartment that evening. A short time later, Mr. Franklin received a call from his wife to come home for an emergency, and Franklin left Parlier with the friend.

The KPD report stated that when Parlier returned home later, he found the Franklins had left with all their belongings. His money bag containing $11,775 was gone.

On Oct. 29, however, Parlier reportedly appeared in Hawkins County Sessions Court and stated that Franklin didn’t steal his money.

The theft charge against Mrs. Franklin had already been dismissed, and on Oct. the theft charge against Mr. Franklin was dismissed as well.
