Shortly before 7 p.m. Wednesday, two Wings Air Rescue helicopters were called in to transport two of the victims from the scene.
Highway 11-W was closed for a short time as firefighters set up a landing zone on the roadway near the crash scene.
One patient was also reported to be pinned in a vehicle, and extrication was complete by 7:16 p.m.
A witness at the scene told the Times News there were three occupants of a car and two occupants of an SUV.
Two people were reportedly being transported to Holston Valley Medical Center by Hawkins County EMS with injuries that were not life-threatening, including possible broken bones.
The crash reportedly occurred about 40 yards from the Highway 11-W intersection with Cross Valley Road, which is located in the far western outskirts of Church Hill.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene including volunteer firefighters from Carters Valley, Church Hill, Surgoinsville and Mount Carmel, as well as the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office, Tennessee Highway Patrol, Church Hill Rescue Squad, and Hawkins County EMS.
Cross Valley Road was expected to be closed well into the evening because the THP trooper called in to investigate was being delayed by another incident in Sullivan County.
Officials at the scene told the Times News that speed appeared to be a factor.
