CHURCH HILL — A 19-year-old Surgoinsville man reportedly remained in critical condition Thursday following a head-on collision that occurred Wednesday evening near Church Hill.

The driver of a Honda Civic reportedly crossed the centerline on Cross Valley Road near the Highway 11-W intersection, resulting in the crash with an SUV that sent five people to the hospital.

Two of those patients were flown out via Wings Air Rescue.

According to a Tennessee Highway Patrol report, shortly before 7 p.m. a 1995 Honda Civic driven by John H. Presley, 19, Bulls Gap, was traveling south on Cross Valley Road approaching the Highway 11-W intersection.

Presley reportedly crossed a double centerline about 40 yards from the intersection and struck a 2011 Jeep Compass head-on.

The Honda came to rest on the side of an embankment on the north side of the road, while the Jeep, driven by Jason M. Patterson, 34, Church Hill, came to an stop in the roadway.

As of Thursday, Presley was listed in stable condition at Holston Valley Medical Center, as was one of his passengers: William Freeman, 21, Kingsport.

A second passenger in the Honda, Ryan Wallace, 19, Surgoinsville, was reported by the THP as being in critical condition.

Jason Patterson was being treated for a broken arm and was listed in stable condition Thursday at HVMC, while his passenger, Angela Patterson, 46, Church Hill, was treated for a broken sternum.

Highway 11-W was closed for a short time as firefighters set up a helicopter landing zone on the roadway near the crash scene.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene including volunteer firefighters from Carters Valley, Church Hill, Surgoinsville and Mount Carmel, as well as the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office, Tennessee Highway Patrol, Church Hill Rescue Squad, and Hawkins County EMS.

Officials at the scene told the Times News that speed appeared to be a factor.

The THP reported that charges are pending against Presley.
