KINGSPORT — Before Black History Month comes to a close, local organizations are giving community members a chance to celebrate the occasion.

New Vision Youth and South Central Kingsport Community Development — in partnership with the KHRA, Girls Inc. and Kingsport Parks and Recreation — have planned three events this weekend, all of which are being offered at little or no cost to the community.

“(We want people) to come and fellowship with each other,” said Johnnie Mae Swagerty, director of South Central Kingsport and New Vision Youth. “Sometimes you might see someone you haven’t seen in years. We really want the churches, the church families, to come out and meet other church families.”

Friday

The festivities will begin with bingo night from 6-8 p.m. at the Riverview Community Room on Wheatley Street. The event is free, but participants are encouraged to bring a door prize.

Saturday

The annual Soul Food Gathering will be held from 4-6 p.m., also at the Riverview Community Room. A suggested donation of $5 per person is requested, and proceeds will go toward New Vision Youth’s event expenses and scholarship fund, Swagerty said.

Menu items will include deer meat, rabbit with gravy and rice, chicken, salmon patties, chicken and dumplings, African salmon pasta and a Caribbean dish prepared by a chef from Barbados. Traditional comfort foods such as soup beans and cornbread, macaroni and cheese, casseroles and desserts will also be served.

Sunday

The celebration will conclude with New Vision Youth’s annual Black History Month program. It will be held at 6:30 p.m. at LampLight Theatre, located at 140 Broad St.

Entertainment will be provided by the New Vision Youth drama team, 4Him gospel group, Full Gospel Mission choir, RailRoad Angels, Full Gospel community youth choir, For His Glory praise dance team and Johnathan and Jacquelyn Ann Ross. There is no admission charge, but donations will be accepted.
