GATE CITY — An elderly man is dead and his female passenger critically injured as the result of a two-vehicle collision in Scott County Thursday.

According to a Virginia State Police news release, Trooper A.L. McCoy is investigating the crash, which occurred at 2:25 p.m. on Route 23 at mile marker 13.

A 2014 Nissan Rogue was leaving a private drive and crossing the northbound lanes of the highway when it pulled into the path of a northbound 2018 Chevrolet Silverado pickup, the release said. The driver of the Chevrolet swerved to avoid the Nissan, but was unable to avoid striking it in the side. The impact sent both vehicles across the southbound lanes, off the road and against the guardrail.

The VSP said the driver of the Nissan, Milton G. Clark, 81, Gate City, Va., died at the scene. His adult female passenger was being treated at Holston Valley Medical Center for life-threatening injuries Thursday night.

The driver of the Chevrolet, Daniel C. Stacy, 31, Appalachia, and his adult female passenger refused treatment at the scene for minor injuries received in the crash.

Both drivers and passengers were wearing their seat belts.
