WASHINGTON TERRACE — Bonneville High girls soccer coach Rob McDaniel doesn’t take anything for granted in the state tournament, and a first-round battle with Desert Hills Wednesday had him on edge.
In the 65th minute, Bonneville finally pushed across a goal when Bailey Hassell crossed one in front of the net that Taelor Anderson finished. Hassell’s shot went over the goalkeeper’s head and she said she thought it was “pretty close to being over the line” but that Anderson “touched it.”
Jaycee Stein added another goal for the Lakers in the 70th minute and Bonneville advanced to the 4-A quarterfinals with a 2-0 victory.
“I knew it was going to be a battle. I knew it was,” McDaniel said. “I had a right to be nervous, didn’t I?”
Bonneville (13-2-2) prides itself on using pressure to frustrate defenses, but on this day, it was Desert Hills’ high pressure that caused problems. The Lakers couldn’t find any rhythm for much of the first half.
“They were pressuring us really hard and I think we were panicked and we weren’t passing to feet so we couldn’t get our combinations together,” Anderson said.
McDaniel said the team started strong but backed off after the first 10 minutes.
“We weren’t being as aggressive as we can be, like we were in the second half,” McDaniel said. “Also, we were creating too big of a gap between our midfield and our forwards, and our forwards were waiting to go to goal instead of checking back to help.”
Thankfully for Bonneville, its defense was up to the challenge while the offense figured things out.
“They held their own the first half,” McDaniel said. “They needed some help and they weren’t getting it. I think they got a little bit more help the second half.”
Ashley Croyle earned the shutout.
Bonneville will host Green Canyon, the third seed from Region 12, in the quarterfinals at 1 p.m. Saturday.
