OGDEN — Ashley Spratlen found the back of the net in the 79th minute to break a 2-2 tie and send St. Joseph to a 3-2 victory over Utah Military Academy in a region tiebreaker to decide 2-A North playoff seeding Friday.

Haley Slater scored twice in the first half to give UMA a 2-0 lead at the break.

St. Joseph turned up the the pressure considerably in the second half. The Jayhawks outshot UMA 18-10 after halftime but Thunderbird keeper Sarah Bird turned away shot after shot.

St. Joseph finally broke through in the 57th minute when Katie Sugiyama blasted a ball into the back of the net from the right side.

Three minutes later, the Jayhawks equalized off a Gracie Fergus corner. The ball bounced off several players, then Sophie Bokinskie headed the ball past Bird’s outstretched arm.

The win makes St. Joseph the four-seed. The Jayhawks will play at 2-A South champion Parowan on Monday.

Utah Military Academy is a five-seed and will play 2-A South four-seed Gunnison Valley in a play-in game Saturday. That game will be played at American Leadership Academy in Spanish Fork. If UMA wins, it will play Monday at 2-A North champion Rowland Hall-St. Mark’s.
