COEBURN — Being aggressive paid off big for Eastside on Wednesday.

The Lady Spartans had nine extra-base hits as Eastside took a 12-6 Cumberland District softball win over the J.I. Burton Lady Raiders.

EXTRA BASES

Eastside (8-6, 5-0) had a home run from Carrie Boyd, plus three triples and five doubles in taking the district win.

“That’s pretty good,” Eastside coach Suzy Atwood said of her team’s hitting effort. “I thought we put the ball in play well. (Burton pitcher McKenzie Franklin) did a good job moving the ball around on us, and we were sometimes a little too aggressive. But I thought we played good. This was a big win. We needed it.”

The victory keeps Eastside on top of the Cumberland standings, with Twin Springs trailing by a game in the loss column.

Eastside and Twin Springs play each other next week at Eastside in a crucial Cumberland contest.

Burton (8-7, 3-3) fell off the pace in the Cumberland race with Wednesday’s loss.

BIG-TIME HITS

Boyd led the hitting parade for Eastside, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs that came from a two-run homer in the opening inning.

The home run gave Eastside a 3-0 lead after the first inning. In the third inning, the Lady Spartans scored three more runs to go up 6-0 and appeared to have the game in hand. But Burton scored four runs on four hits and two Eastside errors in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 6-4.

“We’ve been working on our hitting and we have fire in our hearts and we’re ready to play,” said Boyd.

The junior said the win was a big one for the Lady Spartans.

“I knew we’d get under control,” Boyd said of the scare Burton gave her team in the fourth.

She was correct.

Eastside scored a run in the fourth inning and then five more in the fifth to put the game away.

In addition to Boyd coming up big at the plate, Eastside got solid hitting from Maggie Odle and Leci Sensabaugh.

Odle finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a triple and a double and two RBIs, while Sensabaugh was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and a walk and two RBIs.

Kacie Jones, Cloey Bailey and Reiley McCoy had two RBIs each for Eastside.

Burton’s Kaylee Jenkins finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the Lady Raiders, while Sarah Mullins was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Burton also got a 2-for-4 performance from Franklin. Bailey Jenkins finished 2-for-4 for the Lady Raiders.
