The Lady Bucs rapped out just six hits but a myriad of miscues by the Lady Golden Raiders aided the UH cause greatly. The Bucs scored three runs in the top of the second inning after Carlie Bragg opened with a walk.
She stole second base and came around to score after two throwing errors for a 1-0 lead. One out later, Catie Leonard was hit by a pitch from North starting pitcher Brooklyn Robinson. Leadoff hitter Emily Morgan singled and pitcher Avery Kibelbek reached on an infield error with Morgan scoring on the play.
Katie Stancil plated the third run of the inning with a sharp base hit to center field for a 3-0 Bucs advantage.
Kibelbek went the distance and gave up no runs on five hits. She walked two and struck out four.
Lady Bucs coach Keith Jeffers appreciated her efforts.
“She has improved all year,” Jeffers said. “We have such a young team and she is a freshman. At the first of the year, we struggled, but she is starting to come into her own.”
University High put the game away in the fourth with seven runs on three hits and four North errors.
Cloudland pitching dominates
Kenzie Birchfield and Karah Fields combined on a perfect game in the Lady Highlanders’ 19-0 romp over Hampton.
There were plenty of offensive stars for Cloudland with Fields hitting two doubles, driving in two runs and scoring twice in the leadoff spot.
Jasmine Birchfield went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and two runs scored. Taylor Hicks and Gracie Cook all had triples and drove in two runs. Krisi Bare had two doubles and also finished with two RBIs.
Leah Birchfield had two hits and scored three runs, while Kenzie Birchfield went 2-for-4 and scored two runs.
Three games are on tap for Tuesday. Unaka takes on University High at 5 p.m. followed by Cloudland against North Greene at 6:30 p.m. The losers of those two games play at 8 p.m.
