Twin Springs softball, Burton baseball take regional wins

COUNCIL — The Twin Springs softball team had a romping good time in the Region 1D tournament quarterfinals on Friday.

The Lady Titans racked up 17 hits — three of them home runs — and blew away host Council 15-3.

Chenoa Dean went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and Belle Austin was 3-for-5 with four RBIs. Dean, Natalie Adams and Emaleigh Powers all homered.

Aubrey Powers was strong in the circle for the Lady Titans. She scattered eight hits and struck out eight.

Abby Rose was 2-for-2 with a solo home run for Council.

Northwood 13, Rye Cove 0

SALTVILLE — The Lady Eagles (11-14) saw their season come to an end against Nancy Jo Roberts and the homestanding Lady Panthers (20-1).

Roberts struck out 16 and allowed one hit in the five-inning regional quarterfinal win.

Northwood advanced to play Twin Springs in the regional semifinals.

Patrick Henry 6, Honaker 3

HONAKER — Julia Street went 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored for the Lady Rebels (10-12).

Abigail Street pitched seven strong innings for Patrick Henry, allowing five hits and striking out eight.

Alexis Lowe went 1-for-3 for Honaker (16-8).

Patrick Henry will take on Hogoheegee District foe Chilhowie for a spot in the regional finals.


 

BASEBALL

J.I. Burton 7, Honaker 4, 9 innings

HONAKER — Derrick Allen went 4-for-6 — including four doubles — with three runs scored and the Raiders (10-11) pushed across three runs in the top of the ninth inning to put away the Tigers in the Region 1D quarterfinals.

Caleb McCurdy’s single on a 3-2 count in the top of the ninth scored two of the clutch runs. Tanner Branham also finished the game with two RBIs.

Shawn Tiller went 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead Honaker (11-12).

Chilhowie 13, Thomas Walker 2

CHILHOWIE — Ray Berry led the Warriors to a dominating win by going 3-for-5 with five runs batted in.

Berry also fanned 14 in his five innings of work on the mound. He gave up just one hit.

Lucas Sturgill, Peyton Redinger, Noah Alsup and Dawson Lee had hits for Thomas Walker (10-13) and Alsup and Lee each recorded an RBI.

Chilhowie (21-1) will play J.I. Burton on Tuesday in the semifinals at Virginia-Wise.

Holston 18, Grundy 9

GRUNDY — The Cavaliers pounded out 17 hits against Grundy, which was guilty of four errors.

Jordan Ezzell was 2-for-4 with a triple and four RBIs for Holston, which won despite committing nine errors. Levi Price was 4-for-6 with four RBIs.

Casey Lawson was 2-for-4 with three RBIs for the Golden Wave.


TRACK AND FIELD

TSSAA Small Schools

MURFREESBORO — Happy Valley’s Natalie Newsome won the state championship in the pole vault, tying her own school record by clearing a height of 9-6 at Middle Tennessee State.

Newsome became the first Happy Valley athlete in a field event and the first-ever female track athlete to win a state title.

Newsome had an unexpected easy victory. Her nearest competition went out early with Newsome beating Reilly Fury of Signal Mountain by 2 feet.
