Union swimmers look to be strong contenders at state championships

Ashley Cusano and Ty Bloomer just keep on winning.

Cusano and Bloomer lead the Union swim team and have had plenty of early season success and look to be strong contenders again in the Region 2D championships and Class 2 state championships next month.

ROAD WARRIORS

With no local pool to hold meets, the Union swim team spends plenty of time on the road.

The most recent trip for the Bears was a short one to Abingdon. Bloomer won two events, the 50 and 100 freestyle.

Andrew Goodman also had a solid day in Abingdon. He finished third in the 50 free, fourth in the 100 backstroke and seventh in the 100 free.

Cusano led Union’s girls’ team by winning the 100 backstroke. She also finished second in the 100 freestyle.

Union’s girls also got points from Alivia Davidson, who finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke.

Autumn Meade placed fifth in the 100 backstroke and eighth in the 100 freestyle.

Bloomer and Cusano both picked up big finishes Saturday in the Bruins Invitational in Christiansburg.

Bloomer finished second in the 100 freestyle and seventh in the 100 backstroke. Despite his seventh-place finish, Bloomer’s time was fast enough to qualify him for the Class 2 state championships.

Cusano took wins in both the 100 backstroke and the 100 butterfly at the large meet.

RIDGEVIEW SWIMMER COMES UP BIG TOO

Union was not the only school racking up points in Tuesday’s Abingdon meet.

Ridgeview’s Alyssa Price took wins in both the 200 intermediate and the 100 breaststroke.
