Tyler Gardner went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored to lead Gate City. Jon Compton, Tyler Hamm and Jake Taylor drove in a run apiece and Carson Jenkins doubled and scored once.
The Blue Devils stole four bases, two by Jenkins and one apiece by Compton and Josh Rucevice.
Hamm also earned the win with a six-inning effort. He scattered six hits, allowed four runs, two of them earned, while striking out five and walking four.
The Bears, who outhit the Blue Devils 8-7, pushed across a run in the top of the seventh but couldn’t generate the tying run against reliever Drew Meyers.
Mason Caldwell went 2-for-3 with an RBI, a walk and a run scored for Union. Nate Bailey went 1-for-4 and drove in a run.
Calden Bartee pitched four innings, allowing four hits and two runs with a walk and a strikeout. Bartee also went 1-for-2 with a walk.
Bailey tossed the final two frames and allowed three runs on three hits and struck out five.
Gate City (5-3, 2-1) next plays at John Battle on Thursday at 6 p.m. in a game moved up a day because of the threat of inclement weather Friday.
John Battle 9, Wise Central 4
WISE — The Trojans rallied from a 4-1 deficit to pick up the Mountain 7 road win.
Micah Whitt and Dylan Cunningham drove in two runs apiece for John Battle. Garrett Bowman, Zane Poe and Whitt combined for a four-hitter and 12 strikeouts.
Bryson Collins homered for the Warriors.
Eastside 13, Rye Cove 2, 5 innings
CLINCHPORT — Austin Rittenberry drove in three runs and totaled two hits in the Spartans’ Cumberland District rout of the Eagles.
Nick Livingston scored three times for Eastside (2-4, 1-0), which had Payton Pope strike out eight in going the distance. Pope (1-1), allowed five hits and two earned runs.
Matthew Hardin and Lucas Lane drove in the runs for Rye Cove (2-4, 0-1).
Thomas Walker 7, J.I. Burton 4, 8 innings
NORTON — The Pioneers scored three runs in the top of the eighth and pulled out the Cumberland win despite being outhit 12-2.
Dawson Lee had two RBIs for Thomas Walker.
Jaymen Buchanan and Tyler Spriggs each had three hits and Derrick Allen struck out nine to lead the Raiders.
Science Hill 4, Daniel Boone 3
JOHNSON CITY — Jackson Hill’s two-run single in the bottom of the sixth capped the Hilltoppers’ rally for the Big 7 Conference win.
Hunter Adams retired the first 13 Science Hill batters, and the Trailblazers (10-6, 5-3) held a 3-1 lead in the sixth before the Hilltoppers (8-5, 5-1) broke through.
Ben Edwards reached on an error and Caleb Marmo and Cade McCoy followed with solid singles. Matthew Levi drove in a run with a groundout, setting the stage for Hill, whose sharp single provided the tying and winning runs.
Reliever Landon Slemp earned the win. He worked out of a jam in the top of the sixth, getting a strikeout on a nasty curveball to end a bases-loaded threat.
Adams finished with a five-hitter — three of them came in the sixth — and struck out seven.
Cade Elliott went 2-for-2 with a walk for Boone.
University High 11, Sullivan North 1
KINGSPORT — Henry Borthwick went 3-for-3 with four RBIs, and the Buccaneers cruised to a five-inning Watauga Valley Conference victory over the host Golden Raiders.

Essau Byrd added three RBIs in a 1-for-3 showing and University High got three walks and a pair of runs from Jacob Pealer.
Brant Hare went 1-for-3 with two runs and a walk and pitched four innings for the win. Michael Degennaro closed the game with a scoreless fifth.
Sullivan East 10, Sullivan Central 4
BLOUNTVILLE — Perry Casaday finished 2-for-4 with two doubles, four RBIs and two runs scored for the Patriots.
Eli Milhorn and Dylan Bartley each went 2-for-3, with Milhorn adding two runs and pair of walks. Winning pitcher Dylan White was 2-for-4 and scored three times, and Brantley Ellis drove in two and scored two. Seth Chafin contributed a two-run double.
Cracking a pair of doubles, Mason Buckland led the Cougars with a 4-for-4, two-run day. Trey Sells went 2-for-3.
Volunteer 8, Science Hill 2
CHURCH HILL — Volunteer put Science Hill behind the “8-ball” during their Big 7 game, exploding for all eight of its runs in the sixth inning.
Aliyah Crawley delivered the big blow in the frame, a two-run home run. Audrey Evans added a two-run single and Allie Chandler followed with an RBI single.
Each finished with two hits, and Raenah Barton went 3-for-3.
Sydney Allen was the winning pitcher.
Jannon Glaspie had a two-run single in the fourth for Science Hill. Sejal Neas suffered the loss for the Lady ’Toppers.
Sullivan East 14, Sullivan Central 4
BLUFF CITY — Ripping two home runs and a double in a 3-for-4, two-run performance, Kylee Wolfe piled up six RBIs for the Lady Patriots.
Chelsea Sams homered en route to a 3-for-4 showing that included four RBIs and two runs. Winning pitcher Katelyn Loudy went 3-for-3, scored four times and knocked in a pair of runs.
Courtney Willis belted a two-run homer for the Lady Cougars.
Daniel Boone 3, Lawrence County 2
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Megan Ackerman hurled a complete game and Jaycie Jenkins knocked in three runs for the Lady Trailblazers.
Ackerman amassed seven strikeouts and limited Lawrence County to five hits. Jenkins rapped out a two-run, second-inning single and knocked in a run in the fourth.
Jenkins and Brylee Mesusan each finished 2-for-4 in Boone’s eight-hit effort.
Twin Springs 7, Sullivan South 1
KINGSPORT — Aubrey Powers threw a complete game in the Lady Titans’ interstate win over the Lady Rebels.
Powers also went 2-for-4, including a double, and drove in three runs. Chenoa Dean was 2-for-4 with a double and Natalie Adams went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Tara Shivley struck out four in pitching four scoreless innings, working 5 1/3 overall in the loss. Bradley Warner finished 2-for-3 with a triple and drove in South’s run. Allison Chapman and Shivley each was 2-for-3.
Eastside 14, Rye Cove 4
CLINCHPORT — Maggie Odle had two doubles and drove in three runs in her 3-for-5 day for the Lady Spartans.
Ashley Smith homered twice in the Lady Eagles’ Cumberland loss.
Gate City 6, Union 1
GATE CITY — Amanda Vermillion recorded a hat trick plus one before halftime of the Lady Blue Devils’ Mountain District win.
Vermillion finished with five goals. Jamie Watts added the other goal and had an assist for Gate City. Brooklyn Smith recorded three saves in goal.
In the boys’ match, Gate City won 2-1 on the strength of two Matt Johnson goals.
