WISE — The top seeds advanced to Friday’s Cumberland District girls basketball tournament championship by taking big semifinal wins Wednesday.
The boys team traveled to Washington, D.C., last weekend to take in a Georgetown basketball game and see former teammate Mac McClung play. While at the game, some of the boys met Vice President Mike Pence.
Nikole Counts, Bailey Frazier and Brooklyn Frazier powered the Lady Wolfpack to a 63-27 win over John Battle on Tuesday in the Mountain 7 District quarterfinals.
In Tuesday’s other opening-round Cumberland District boys basketball tournament game, Castlewood defeated Twin Springs 44-39.
In Tuesday’s other opening-round Cumberland District girls game, Twin Springs got 22 points from Abby Castle on the way to a 57-38 win over Castlewood.
The Cumberland District boys tournament got underway Tuesday at Virginia-Wise's Prior Convocation Center. Thomas Walker and Castlewood earned quarterfinal wins, the Pioneers beating Rye Cove 72-48 and the Blue Devils topping Twin Springs 44-39.
