SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Police say the two Utah teenagers accused of shooting and wounding an off-duty police officer during an attempted robbery likely didn’t know the victim was law enforcement.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that the West Valley City officer was checking his communal mailbox last Tuesday when the teens stopped him and attempted to rob him with a handgun.

West Valley police say the off-duty officer and teens exchanged gunfire before the suspects fled the scene.

Shortly after, a 17-year-old male and 15-year-old male arrived at a hospital in a vehicle matching the description the officer had given after the shooting.

The 17-year-old was shot once, while the younger teen was shot twice. The officer was shot in the foot.

All are expected to survive.

Charges have not yet been filed against either teen.
