CHURCH HILL —  The Volunteer High School Theater, Music and Art departments will present Fine Arts Night Friday evening with an art show, concert and play at the Little Theater.

Student art will be on display outside the Little Theater, and patrons are invited to arrive a little before 6 p.m. to view the pieces.

Beginning at 6 p.m., the jazz band and choir will perform for about 50 minutes, followed by a performance of the musical play “Once On This Island” beginning at 7 p.m.

Theater director Chris Broadhead said the play is an 85-minute nonstop musical with no intermission. It features almost no speaking parts that aren’t singing.

“ ‘Once On This Island’ is a story of an island that has kind of a lower class side and an upper class side,” Broadhead said. “A girl on the poorer part of the island falls in love with a boy from the wealthy side of the island. It’s got a little bit of the ‘Romeo and Juliet’ aspect, with elements of ‘The Little Mermaid’ thrown in as well — Hans Christian Andersen, not the Disney version.”

The cast includes: Tiannah Sanders as Ti Moune; Kayla Darnell as Asaka; Andy Wolf-Bugayong as Agwe; Braylee Polson as Erzulie; Matthew Gilbert as Papa Ge; Kasey Cordell as Mama Euralie; Ethan Tipton as Tonton Julian; Corey Peters as Daniel; Tobey Lawson as Armand; Morgan Darnell as Andrea; Rhyann James as Little Ti Moune; and Alexis Mauk and Sam Pinnex as the storytellers.

“Everybody in this ensemble tells the story,” Broadhead said. “All of the cast are storytellers. A lot of musicals you have music and there’s some dialogue and a scene, and then they go back to another song. This one is almost completely sung through. There’s music start to finish. There’s very little just speaking lines in it, so it’s a true musical.”
