Monthly column will shine ‘spotlight on the arts'

By Serina Marshall • Jan 7, 2020 at 4:30 PM

“All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts, his acts being seven ages.” — William Shakespeare.

Welcome to the audience of “Spotlight on the Arts.” Allow me to step center stage and introduce myself! My name is Serina Marshall. I am a local author, journalist and musician. I have been a part of nearly every facet of the arts: from acting, to music directing, to playing piano, to singing, dancing, writing and beyond. In this column, I will be introducing you to some of the incredible talent in the area and the various art outlets that happen right here in our own backyard.

When people think of art, the first thing that comes to mind is some type of drawing or painting. And though this is absolutely a type of art, the arts are this and so much more.

Art is creativity. It is bringing your imagination to life and showcasing the talents that you work so hard to pursue and perfect. Art takes place on various stages and doesn’t necessarily have to take place in an art gallery. Art can be bands playing their music inside a small bar or coffeehouse, poets reading their hearts to a room of people who understand, actors bridging the gap between reality and façade, and dancers telling intricate stories with their bodies. Wherever you perform your art, THAT is your stage and THAT is your canvas.

All over our area, there are artists exploding with passion and the desire to do what they love to do. Artists, who want to express themselves, live their dreams and share it all with those who are looking to immerse themselves in the experience. The brilliance and dedication that goes along with the arts cannot be denied. This is where I come in.

My goal is to spotlight these incredible artists and their creations, to shine a light on these performers. The world itself is comprised of beauty, wonder, mystery and improvisation. Every day, we wake up, step foot onto our stage and perform to all those we come in contact with within those 24 hours. How do we want to be seen and accepted? What do we want to portray and express? You see, we are all performers in our own right. The world is our stage and society the audience.

Art is everywhere, including inside you. We are all a walking gallery and playbill. By supporting the arts and the artists behind them, you are keeping hope and dreams alive. We all could use a little cheering up and cheering on now and then.

So, sit back and get comfortable. Then, as the lights dim and the spotlight hits its mark, prepare to be immersed in the world of art and intrigue. Hopefully, you will find yourself standing at the end of the performance, in resounding ovation.
