The K-Mets scored six runs over the first two innings and put away the Bluefield Blue Jays 8-5 on Friday at Hunter Wright Stadium.
Kingsport (31-32) is two games back of West Division-leading Johnson City (33-30) and just a half-game behind Bristol (31-31) for second place.
Anthony Dirocie led the way for Kingsport, going 3-for-5 — including a solo home run in the sixth inning and a double — and scored twice. As part of his 3-for-4 showing, Jaylen Palmer doubled, recorded an RBI and scored twice.
Nick MacDonald (2-0), the K-Mets’ fourth and final pitcher, went the final two innings for the win. Starter Junior Santos was strong over the first 4 1/3 frames, scattering six hits and allowing three runs with two strikeouts and two walks.
Blue Jays starter Alejandro Melean (1-1) was pulled after two-thirds of an inning. He allowed two hits and three runs, walked two and fanned two.
Justin Ammons was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and Leonardo Jimenez was 3-for-5 with a run scored for Bluefield, which stranded 13 runners.
Game 2 of the series is scheduled for Saturday. Game time is 6:30 p.m.
