Dean fires up 36 points in Devils' win over Spartans

GATE CITY — In a benefit game between VHSL boys basketball powerhouses, sharpshooter Bradley Dean stole the show.

The 6-foot-2 Blue Devils senior guard torched the nets for 36 points in Class 2 power Gate City’s 86-68 victory over Class 1 beast Eastside on Tuesday night in an early-season showdown inside the Devils’ Den.

Dean was difficult to stop from start to finish and scored 18 points in each half. D’Andre Mack added to the Blue Devils’ firepower with 14 points and Jon Compton came through with 10 for the home team.

Ethan Powers was a force for the Spartans, back-to-back state championship game finalists. Powers finished with 27 points, five rebounds and two steals.

Grayson White totaled 15 points, four assists and two steals, and Connor Blevins tallied nine points and four rebounds for Eastside. Garrett Whited also grabbed five rebounds and Luke Kirk dished six assists.

ABINGDON 87, RICHLANDS 53

ABINGDON — Chase Hungate had himself a night, dropping in 25 points to drive the Falcons to the blowout win in the nondistrict matchup.

Jake O’Quinn added 17 points and Abingdon totaled 13 made 3-pointers, including five by O’Quinn and three by Hungate. Brent Boggs added 10 points.

Colton Medley scored 26 points and Cade Simmons had 17 for the Blue Tornado.

VOLUNTEER 58, WEST GREENE 49

MOSHEIM — The Falcons soared to the nonconference win on the road.

Braden Minton led Volunteer (5-4) — which moved just one win behind its victory total for all of last season — with 16 points. Garrison Barrett totaled 11, and Andrew Knittel and Dakota Hicks each finished with eight.

Allen Vaughn and Trevor Daniels scored nine points apiece to lead West Greene.

TRI-CITIES CHRISTIAN 62, CEDAR VIEW CHRISTIAN 45

KINGSPORT — Drew Correll and Adam Pigeon recorded double-doubles and the Eagles flew away from the Seahawks in the fourth quarter. Correll had 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Pigeon recorded a 15-point, 10-rebound night.

Tri-Cities Christian’s Gavyn Etter totaled 16 points, hitting three 3-pointers. Nick Rose blossomed for 18 points and Will Jones had 17 for Cedar View Christian.

UNICOI COUNTY 82, CLOUDLAND 57

ROAN MOUNTAIN — Brock Thompson torched the nets for 28 points in the Blue Devils’ big win, and Caleb Adkins fired up another 13.

Elijah Blair cut loose to score 29 of the Highlanders’ points.

JOHNSON COUNTY 60, UNAKA 52

MOUNTAIN CITY — One of four Johnson County players in double-digit scoring, Ethan Bower piled up 18 points.

Michael Oxentine had 13, Lucas Phillips 12 and Clayton Cross 10 for the the Longhorns, who took control with an 18-5 second quarter.

Ryan Johnson led Unaka with 18 points, Will Sexton added 16 and Dylan Whitehead dropped in 10.

SOUTH GREENE 62, HAMPTON 58

HAMPTON — The Rebels jumped out to a 12-point halftime lead and held on.

Sully Fox went for 18 points, Clint Lamb added 15 and Isaac Hoese had 10 for South Greene.

Rocky Croy and Jordan Bentley scored 11 points apiece for the Bulldogs.

GIRLS

VOLUNTEER 56, WEST GREENE 35

MOSHEIM — Aliyah Crawley posted a 15-point effort in leading the Lady Falcons to the road win over the Lady Buffaloes.

Audrey Evans chimed in with 11 points and Kenady Knittel tallied nine, all on shots behing the 3-point line. Tayli Rader was West Greene’s leading scorer with 11 points.

CLOUDLAND 48, UNICOI COUNTY 43

ROAN MOUNTAIN — Gracie Freeman went 12-for-14 at the free-throw line, scoring a game-high 16 points to lead the Lady Highlanders.

Jasmine Birchfield added to the Cloudland cause with a 10-point effort.

Caroline Podvin was Unicoi County’s leader with 15 points. Tenley Holt and Jocelyn Metcalf each scored nine.

JOHNSON COUNTY 49, UNAKA 40

MOUNTAIN CITY — The Lady Longhorns imposed their will defensively in the first half when they held the Lady Rangers to nine points.

Taylor Cox provided Johnson County with plenty of offense, racking up 21 points.

Unaka’s Lyndie Ramsey broke free in the second half and closed with 14 points.

SOUTH GREENE 67, HAMPTON 34

HAMPTON — The tradition-rich Lady Rebels outscored the Lady Bulldogs 33-11 in the second half for the runaway win. Addison Williams, Kaley Collins and Jayden Merriweather all finished with 13 points, and Jordyn Roderick scored 10.

Madison McClain was Hampton’s leading scorer with 10 and Bridgett Heaton contributed eight.

PROVIDENCE ACADEMY 52, ASHEVILLE SCHOOL 29

JOHNSON CITY — Behind a career-high 32 points from Christen Sholes, the Lady Knights (5-2) handily beat the visitors from across the North Carolina state line.

Sholes knocked down five of Providence Academy’s seven 3-pointers.
