Bunch boosts Union to big district win over Abingdon

BIG STONE GAP — Bradley Bunch raced down the floor for a layup with three seconds remaining, and the Union boys basketball team edged Abingdon 57-56 for a huge early-season Mountain 7 District victory on Friday.

Bunch, a sophomore, finished with 14 points to lead the Bears (6-3, 1-1), who knocked the Falcons (5-2, 1-1) out of first place in the district. Sean Cusano and Alex Rasnick chipped in with 10 each.

River Carter led Abingdon with 18 points. Chase Hungate contributed 16 and Jake O’Quinn added 13.

RYE COVE 51, HURLEY 47

CLINCHPORT — Roscoe Haines and Matthew Rhoton scored 14 points apiece to lead the Eagles to the nondistrict win at home.

Down 27-23 at halftime, Rye Cove (5-4) outgunned Hurley 28-20 in the second half — including 16-5 in the fourth quarter.

Mason Hardin added 10 points to the winning cause.

J.I. BURTON 56, HOLSTON 53

DAMASCUS — Jonah Cochrane scored 16 points and the Raiders (6-3) picked up the road win.

Lonnie Lindsey added 13 points and Mikey Culbertson finished with 10 in the nondistrict win.

CLOUDLAND 57, WASHBURN 39

JAMESTOWN — Elijah Blair clicked for 17 points and Cloudland, in control most of the way, tumbled Washburn in the Sgt. York Southeastern Invitational.

Hunter Shell contributed 14 points, including four 3-pointers, and Bentley Gilbert 11 for the Highlanders.

Cloudland asserted itself with a 20-10 opening quarter, saw the Pirates inch back within seven at halftime, then controlled second-half play.

UNICOI COUNTY 66, CHUCKEY-DOAK 55

AFTON — Brock Thompson fired in 19 points and the Blue Devils captured a non-conference win over the Black Knights.

Four players hit double digits as Caleb Adkins and Lucas Slagle each scored 13 points. Brett Lingerfelt stoked the winning fire with 11 points.

Alex Maupin was the leader for the Black Knights with 23 points. Corwin Ramsey accounted for 19.

GIRLS

ABINGDON 62, UNION 49

BIG STONE GAP — Peyton Carter dropped in 22 points, knocking down four shots from behind the 3-point arc, and Sarah Walters contributed 17 points to power the Lady Falcons (8-1, 2-0) to the Mountain 7 road win.

Emili Brooks put up 19 points, Jada Smith netted 18 and Heather Lipps totaled 12 to lead the Lady Bears (6-3, 0-2).

VIRGINIA HIGH 57, TENNESSEE HIGH 53

BRISTOL, Va. — Ale Sydnor scored 17 points, Bre Owens added 14 and Maria Wilson had 12 to lift the Lady Bearcats to a home victory over their crosstown rivals.

Kenzie Nickels led the Lady Vikings with 13 points. Riley Fritts finished with 12.

UNICOI COUNTY 53, CHUCKEY-DOAK 21

AFTON — The Lady Blue Devils raced out to a 30-7 halftime lead over the Lady Black Knights.

Tenley Holt burned the nets with 17 points, and Ashtan Vance added fuel with 15 more. Caroline Podvin also finished in double figures with 10.
