KINGSPORT — ABC News was in town last weekend to do a story on the Douglass High School basketball tribute game. Its coverage can be viewed at https://youtu.be/tQpTRfgMVwM

Douglass was Kingsport’s African-American high school prior to desegregation. Last Saturday in their games against Jefferson County, the Dobyns-Bennett basketball teams played as the Tigers and Tigerettes for the evening and wore special uniforms to honor the Douglass players.

Calvin Sneed, one of the organizers of the tribute, said he was delighted with ABC’s coverage.

“We still have a long way to go in this country to end racism, prejudice and divisiveness. But with this single move, as exemplified by ABC News coming to our community, seeing the tribute and deeming it worthy to be the lead-off story to the network’s celebration of Black History Month in America, our small city is leading the way nationally and globally in the right direction, coming together at the meeting table,” he said. “We will be the example that other schools and communities can follow.”

Sneed praised D-B administrators who “took the notion that it’s better to give flowers to the living now, than give them their just honors at the grave later.

“If every school in the country applied that example to the former African-American high schools in their own cities, this country would take giant steps toward understanding and tolerance while players and fans are still with us. The thanks would just overflow.”
