VHSL Class 2 girls basketball state champion Gate City continues to make its mark across the commonwealth.

On Tuesday, Lady Blue Devils junior Sarah Thompson was named the Class 2 player of the year and Gate City’s Kelly Houseright was voted coach of the year.

Thompson, the Times News Southwest Virginia Player of the Year, is getting looks from NCAA Division I programs like East Tennessee State and Radford. She surpassed the 1,000-point career mark this past season in which she averaged 16.8 points, 6 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 3.4 steals per game.

Houseright guided the Lady Blue Devils to their first state basketball championship since 2006, helping her squad carve a path through three regional champions in a row on its way to the crown.

Two other players from the Mountain 7 District joined Thompson on the eight-player all-state first team: Union senior Jayda Smith and Ridgeview sophomore Brooklyn Frazier.

Smith averaged 15 points and 9 rebounds in her final season with the Lady Bears. Frazier averaged 14 points, 4.7 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 3 steals for the Wolfpack.

Lebanon senior Averie Price represented Region 2D squads on the second team.

Two Mountain 7 products, seniors Bradley Dean of Gate City and Isaiah McAmis of Wise Central, earned Class 2 first-team honors in boys basketball.

The Times News Southwest Virginia Player of the Year for 2019-20, Dean became the third straight Gate City star to eclipse 2,000 points for his career, joining Zac Ervin from the previous season and Mac McClung from two seasons ago. The trio made Gate City the first public high school in the nation to boast three consecutive 2,000-point scorers.

Dean led the Blue Devils into the state championship game this past season, finishing with 862 points and a 29.7 per-game average. He closed his high school career with 2,230 points.

McAmis averaged 24 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 2.3 steals per game during his final year at Central. He’ll play at Virginia-Wise next season.

Central’s Elijah Hayes made the all-state second team. Hayes, who plans to play for Roanoke College next year, averaged 18 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 2.3 steals his senior season.

Abingdon’s Peyton Carter gave the Mountain 7 four girls earning all-state honors by making the VHSL Class 3 first team.

Carter, who will continue her basketball career at NCAA Division I Tennessee Tech, averaged 21.1 points, 7.4 rebounds, 6.6 assists and 3 steals her senior season.
