GATE CITY — More than 200 children across Scott County received new clothes, hygiene items and school supplies on Thursday as part of the Scott County Rotary Club’s annual Back-to-School project.
Who: Led by project co-chairs Ashley Clark and Whitney McConnell, several club members and other volunteers gathered at Gate City United Methodist Church on Thursday morning to load the supplies for delivery. The items were given to students who had been identified by their teachers as having a need.
What: McConnell said students were given the essentials they often need to start a new school year, including backpacks, two new outfits, a pair of shoes, hygiene items, school supplies, socks and underwear.
Where: Supplies were taken to every county school, along with Gate City Christian School. McConnell said 201 students received items, slightly fewer than last year.
How: Most of the items were purchased using funds raised by the Rotary Club throughout the year. “We purchase everything,” McConnell said, “but some notebooks were donated, and the toothbrushes were donated by a dentist in town.”
