Season of Giving: Nickelsville students help feed hungry

Submitted by Samantha Gilmer • Dec 26, 2019 at 10:30 AM

Second-graders at Nickelsville Elementary School and members of Cub Scout Pack 166 hosted a food drive from Nov. 20 through Dec. 20 to collect items for the Food Pantry in Gate City, Virginia. The Scott County food pantry exists to help those who need benevolent assistance. The food pantry is open every Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. People can typically pick up food from the pantry once a month, or sooner if the need arises.

Our students wanted to express loving care for those in need. We sent home plastic bags to collect non-perishable items. Some examples of items collected included: canned soup, canned chili, canned fish, canned fruit, canned beef stew, canned vegetables, canned meats, canned milk, etc.

Second grade teachers created a bin in their classrooms to collect the items. Once we collect all the items, Cub Scouts Pack 166 drops off the items. Our goal throughout this project is to shine a light to others during this season of giving.

Community donations can also be dropped off at the Food Pantry, 112 Library Ave., Gate City.
