OGDEN — Ready for a swingin’ good time?

The next monthly offering in the Excellence in the Community free concert series will feature the big band sounds of the Salt Lake City-based Tad Calcara & New Deal Swing.

Calcara and his 16-piece band will perform at 7 p.m. Monday, April 16, in Peery’s Egyptian Theater, 2415 Washington Blvd. Admission is free.

Calcara has been principal clarinet with the Utah Symphony since 1999. He and his band will play the music of the famed Benny Goodman Swing Orchestra — and more specifically, a re-enactment of its 1938 concert in Carnegie Hall. That concert marked the first jazz performance in Carnegie Hall.

Calcara and company have performed concerts with the Utah Symphony and at the Salt Lake Jazz Festival, as well as centennial tributes to Goodman and Artie Shaw.

The Excellence in the Community series presents a different Utah artist each month in the Ogden venue. The year-round series began Feb. 6, 2017, with a performance of classic Motown hits by Changing Lanes Experience.
