ROGERSVILLE – Buying a bowl of chili Thursday at the Hawkins County Rescue Squad will help make Christmas a lot better this year for an underprivileged Hawkins County child.

On Thursday the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office will host a $7 chili luncheon fundraiser at the Rescue Squad, 955 E McKinney Ave., Rogersville, to benefit the department’s annual “Christmas with a Cop” program.

The Of One Accord ministry’s Christmas for the Children program is a blessing for all 1,000 children served each year, but the 30 children who are “adopted” by the sheriff's office each year really hit the jackpot.

The HCSO gets it's Christmas children’s names from Of One Accord, and like all children in that program, the sheriff's kids receive a party with a meal.

This year’s party will be donated by Hardee's, and there’s usually some entertainment during the party, and of course Santa will be on hand to make sure everything runs smoothly.

When the party is over, however, the kids ride to the Rogersville Walmart in an HCSO armored troop transport vehicle where they are paired with a deputy who escorts them on a $150 shopping spree to buy anything they want.

The HCSO “Christmas With a Cop” program hopes to serve 30 children this holiday season, but it's going to cost about $4,500.

To raise money the HCSO is holding a $7 chili lunch fundraiser at the Rescue Squad lobby on Thursday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

A $7 donation includes a big bowl of homemade chili, either dine-in or carry out, along with optional sour cream, cheese and onions, as well as a homemade dessert and a drink.

There will also be a craft sale during the chili lunch, and 100 percent of all proceeds will go toward the 2019 HCSO “Christmas with a Cop” program.

If you can’t make it to the Rescue Squad on Thursday, but you still want to make a contribution to Christmas with a Cop, call the HCSO at (423) 272-4848 weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. and ask for Stacy, Becky, or Marcy for more information.
