COVID-19: Virginia, Tennessee state counts continue to climb

The Virginia Department of Health reported 604 new cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) Sunday to bring the commonwealth’s total of confirmed and presumptive cases to 12,970 since the pandemic began. There have been 2,014 hospitalizations and 448 deaths, including 12 since Saturday.

The VDH tracking site (www.vdh.virginia.gov/coronavirus) reported one new case in the LENOWISCO District to bring the total in Scott County to six. The other Southwest Virginia counties held steady with Sunday’s confirmed case numbers at: eight in Lee County, two in Norton and 20 in Wise County. Virginia reported 12,488 confirmed cases and 482 presumptive cases across the commonwealth.

The Tennessee Department of Health (https://www.tn.gov/health/cedep/ncov) reported 478 new confirmed cases across the state Sunday, including four new cases in Northeast Tennessee.

As of Sunday, the TDH reported a total of 9,667 cases since tracking began in March. The state reported a total of 181 deaths (up three from Saturday) and 828 hospitalizations (up seven from Saturday). Of all the confirmed cases, 4,527 are listed as recovered, which the TDH defines as people who (1) have been confirmed to be asymptomatic by their local or regional health department and have completed their required isolation period or (2) are at least 21 days beyond the first test confirming their illness.

In Northeast Tennessee, Sunday’s case numbers by county include: 12 cases, five recoveries and one death in Carter; 41 cases, 25 recoveries and two deaths in Greene; no cases in Hancock; 29 cases, 26 recoveries and two deaths in Hawkins; two cases and two recoveries in Johnson; 47 cases, 41 recoveries and one death in Sullivan; one case and one recovery in Unicoi; and 52 cases and 46 recoveries in Washington County.

As of Sunday, labs in Tennessee had performed a total of 147,474 tests, while labs in Virginia had performed 76,118.
