KINGSPORT — A city man accused of stabbing his brother in the head and torso last week was located Tuesday thanks to a tip, netting his arrest on a charge of attempted second-degree murder.

Charles Kimball Hughes, 50, was apprehended about 5:30 p.m. at Model City Apartments on Stonegate Road. A backpack he possessed reportedly contained a bloody T-shirt, which was confiscated as evidence.

The attack occurred last Wednesday at the Oak Drive Circle home of Hughes’ brother, Joe Hughes, 54. Kingsport police say he was transported to a hospital by EMS with multiple severe lacerations and possible internal injuries.

Neighbors of the victim called police, according to an incident report. As a woman worked in her garden, Joe Hughes approached “covered in blood” and stated that Charles had stabbed him.

Through further investigation, Kingsport Police Department detectives came to believe the assault occurred during an argument between the brothers. What the altercation was about has not been specified.

An immediate search of the area failed to locate Charles Hughes. Police sent a notice to the media that he was wanted for attempted second-degree murder and solicited help from the public in locating him. That anonymous tip came in on Tuesday afternoon.

Charles Hughes, Sunnyview Drive, Kingsport, also faces a charge of aggravated assault. As of Wednesday morning, he was being held in the Kingsport City Jail awaiting arraignment.
