According to a release from Kingsport Police Department Public Information Officer Tom Patton, on the morning of Nov. 28, a white 2010 Ford Escape was stolen from a Stratford Road apartment complex in Kingsport while the owner had left the SUV unlocked, running, and unattended while the windshield was defrosting.
The stolen vehicle, which had been extensively vandalized, was found abandoned in Sullivan County a few days later. The interior had been damaged, the ignition stripped and the exterior spray-painted black. There was also a reddish-brown stain in the vehicle that appeared to be blood.
The stain was swabbed and sent to the TBI Crime Lab for analysis. The KPD recently received the results of that test, which indicated that the stain had been positively matched by DNA to Anthony J. Coffey, 28, whose last known address was 313 E. Sullivan St., Kingsport, the release said.
A warrant charging Coffey with motor vehicle theft over $2,500 and vandalism over $1,000 has been obtained.
Anyone who knows Coffey’s current whereabouts is asked to contact detectives in the KPD Criminal Investigations Division at (423) 229-9429 or Kingsport Central Dispatch at (423) 246-9111.
