BLOUNTVILLE — A Kingsport man is accused of murder following the death of an infant who was severely beaten.

On Wednesday, a Sullivan County grand jury indicted Nickelous Lee Lewis, 27, of Cardinal Street. True bills were returned on charges of first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated child abuse.

According to court records, the victim was 2 months old at the time of the abuse. It is alleged to have occurred last year in early and mid-December, when Lewis reportedly inflicted serious injury, “knowingly, and other than by accidental means.” A date for the child’s death is listed as “on or about Dec. 18.”

The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case, and several doctors were among the witnesses testifying before the grand jury. The presentment does not specify Lewis’ relationship to the infant.

Lewis has been held in the Sullivan County Jail since Dec. 21, when he was booked in for violation of probation.

Late Thursday morning he was served with the new warrants. His bond is set at $250,000.
