KINGSPORT — Police say a body found last weekend in the Holston River is that of a Hawkins County man.

In a Wednesday afternoon statement to the media, the Kingsport Police Department identified the deceased as John R Stair, 40, of Church Hill. Authorities have not commented on whether foul play is suspected, but they have asked that anyone with information about the case contact KPD detectives.

“The cause and circumstances of his death remain part of an active and ongoing investigation by the KPD Criminal Investigations Division,” the press release said. “As such, no further details can or will be released at this time. Additional information will be released as it becomes available at the appropriate point in the investigation.”

Stair’s body was located Saturday evening by a fisherman in a stretch of the river adjacent to Ridgefields subdivision. According to Sullivan County District Attorney General Barry Staubus, detectives could not immediately determine if there were any signs of trauma to the body.

The body was sent to the ETSU Quillen College of Medicine for autopsy and positive identification. Authorities have yet to state any potential causes of death.

KPD investigators can be reached by dialing (423) 229-9429 or (423) 246-9111. Alternatively, tips can be submitted anonymously via the KPD’s “Citizen Feedback” forms: https://www.kingsporttn.gov/city-services/police-department/contact-us
