Staff report • May 30, 2019 at 10:50 AM

KINGSPORT — On Thursday morning, the Tennessee Highway Patrol in Fall Branch reported a black bear had been hit by a vehicle and killed. It occurred along Interstate 26 at mile marker 1.

According to the THP Twitter page:

“@THPFallBranch out with a large adult black bear that was struck and killed overnight in Kingsport, Tn. 😔

It’s sad when these beautiful animals, native to our region, are killed.

TWRA notified.

You never know what may run out in front of your vehicle. Both 🙌 on the wheel!”

As previously reported by the Times News, a bear was spotted this past weekend along nearby Riverfront Park.

According to Bays Mountain Park Ranger Bob Culler, many sightings this time of year are young bears looking for new territories, after being kicked out by their mothers. Once the bears settle into their new territories, the sightings will calm down, Culler said.
