KINGSPORT — A Kingsport couple were critically injured when the motorcycle they were riding collided with a vehicle Friday afternoon.

According to a news release from the Kingsport Police Department, at approximately 1:45 p.m. certified crash reconstructionists with the KPD’s Traffic Unit investigated the incident.

Their investigation revealed that a 2010 Harley-Davidson motorcycle, operated by Donnie L. Brown, 48, and also ridden by Matonya G. Brown, 45, was eastbound on Memorial Boulevard approaching the intersection with Conway Drive.

Meanwhile, a 2012 Chevrolet Impala four-door sedan, driven by Harold S. Jones, 88, Kingsport, was northbound on Conway Drive approaching the same intersection. Jones failed to yield the right-of-way and pulled his vehicle into the path of the motorcycle, the release said.

The Harley-Davidson struck the driver’s side of the Chevrolet, resulting in both riders being thrown from the motorcycle. Mr. and Mrs. Brown sustained life-threatening injuries and were transported by Sullivan County EMS to a hospital for emergency medical treatment. As of early Friday evening, both were hospitalized in critical condition.

Jones was not injured in the crash.

Because the collision remains under investigation with charges pending, no additional information will be released at this time, the release said.
