KINGSPORT — A 73-year-old Gate City man died in a two-vehicle crash in Kingsport on Thursday afternoon.

According to a news release from the Kingsport Police Department, John Owen Davenport, 73, of Gate City, was driving a white 2004 Toyota Sienna minivan westbound on Holston Valley Drive approaching Clinchfield Street at about 4 p.m.

A black 2015 Jeep Wrangler sport utility vehicle, driven by Cayley A. McCaslin, 26, of Kingsport, was northbound on Clinchfield Street approaching the Holston Valley Drive intersection.

Police said Davenport failed to yield the right-of-way and pulled his Toyota into the intersection, directly into the path of the Jeep. The Jeep struck the minivan in the driver’s side, causing the Toyota to roll over and come to rest on its top.

Davenport was killed in the crash, while McCaslin sustained possible injuries.

Due to the severe nature of the crash, the KPD Traffic Unit was called to the scene. Police said the collision remains under investigation. No additional information is available for release at this time.
