ROGERSVILLE — A Rogersville man pointed an “assault style rifle” at his wife Thursday night during a domestic dispute, according to police, then barricaded himself in a bathroom, leading to an hour-long standoff before he was arrested.

As of Friday, Darrin Hugh Hensley, 25, 601 Douglas Drive, was being held in the Hawkins County Jail without bond pending arraignment set for Monday in Sessions Court.

Shortly after 10:30 p.m. Thursday, Rogersville police responded to Hensley’s residence on a report of a man with a gun.

Rogersville Police Department Detective Charlie Gibson told the Times News Friday that when officers arrived on the scene, they spoke to Hensley’s wife, who stated that Hensley had been drinking and had pointed a rifle at her.

“They’re married and they’re in the process of getting a divorce,” Gibson said. “They work at the same place together and came home and started talking about stuff, and something triggered him. He went into the bedroom, and then he left the bedroom and got into his truck, and then in a few minutes he stormed in and pointed the gun at his wife.”

Gibson added, “He says he heard a gunshot outside the house, so he storms in, pulls a gun on her and says, ‘You’ve got to drop your gun.’ She don’t have a gun. She told him that twice.”

Hensley reportedly then placed the rifle on the bed, and his wife took the magazine out, although the weapon still had one round chambered.

His wife then called 911 and Hensley barricaded himself in the bathroom with the “assault style rifle” and a bulletproof vest, according to a police report.

Gibson said that RPD Officer George Henry spoke to Hensley through the door for about an hour and assured him he wouldn’t be hurt, after which Hensley surrendered.

The rifle and body armor were recovered from the bathtub.

Gibson said the aggravated assault charge was placed because Hensley put his wife in fear for her life when he allegedly pointed the rifle at her.
