WISE – A Coeburn man will serve more than two years in prison in connection with the abuse of his 86-year old mother in 2019.

Danny Ray Kiser, 55, pleaded guilty on Feb. 21 in Wise County Circuit Court to abuse of an incapacitated adult, possession of controlled substances and possession of drug paraphernalia. The charges stemmed from the July 3, 2019, discovery by police and social workers of Kiser’s immobile mother in unsanitary conditions and suffering from open sores.

According to police reports, Kiser told investigators that his mother had been in those conditions for several weeks and that he had not tried to take her to a hospital or doctor. Investigators said they also found narcotics and drug paraphernalia in the residence.

Kiser was sentenced to 16 years in prison with 13 years and four months suspended and 15 years’ probation upon release.

“Our office has made it a top priority to aggressively prosecute those who harm senior citizens and the elderly,” Wise County Commonwealth’s Attorney Chuck Slemp III said of the case. “We are proud of these convictions and thankful for the hard work of the investigator and social worker in making this case possible.”
