OGDEN — Clocks aren’t the only thing springing forward this weekend. Ogden’s women of roller derby hope to spring past an opponent that basically cleaned their clocks last year.
On Saturday night, the Junction City Roller Dolls will host “Daylight Skatings,” the league’s season opener, at the Golden Spike Event Center. The rock-’em, sock-’em contest on roller skates will feature local favorites Junction City Trainwrecks and the Wyoming-based Jackson Hole Juggernauts.
The event begins at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 10, in the Exhibit Hall of the event center at 1000 N. 1200 West in Ogden. Doors open at 5 p.m.

Jamie Trujillo, a member of the Junction City Roller Dolls, says roller derby is a fast, action-packed sport.
“We’ve been referring to it as ‘Not your mama’s roller derby,’” Trujillo said. “It is a full-contact sport. It’s not scripted like it was back in the 1980s when it was more like WWE wrestling.”
Roller derby involves two five-woman teams on roller skates, competing on an oval-shaped flat track. One player from each team is designated the “jammer.” Jammers score points by passing everyone on the opponent’s team. The rest of the women on the track try to help their own jammer score points while keeping their opponent’s jammer from passing them.
The participants usually take on derby nicknames, similar to a stage name. Trujillo’s is TruRebel.
“It’s like my alter ego,” she said. “As Jamie T., I wouldn’t even jaywalk. But when I’m TruRebel on the track, it’s all free game.”
Trujillo says they’re hoping for some payback this year against the Jackson Hole Juggernauts.
“We played them last year and they slaughtered us — like, 200-some points to 90,” she said.
The evening will feature a sanctioned bout, as well as a co-ed scrimmage.
Tickets are $10 in advance, from brownpapertickets.com or a roller derby athlete. Admission is $12 at the door. Children 12 and younger are admitted free.
The 2018 Junction City Roller Dolls season will also include two competitions in April, one in August and one in October.
