When was the last time you visited the dentist?

Most dentists recommend a checkup every six months. However, many Americans lack the time, access, or dental insurance to make sure their teeth stay healthy. In fact, the American Dental Association reports that more than 20 percent of adults haven’t visited the dentist in three or more years.

Luckily, the Appalachian Miles for Smiles nonprofit is here to help. The organization’s vision, according to its website, is to “promote healthier lifestyles, improved personal image, and employ-ability.”

The nonprofit participates in all local Remote Area Medical events, and it has a packed schedule of smaller events across Northeast Tennessee. At the following events, Appalachian Miles for Smiles will offer dental hygiene care and eye examinations:

August 23-24: First Broad Street United Methodist, Kingsport (Call 224-1531 for availability)

September 6-7: Health Wagon, Wise

September 20-21: Remote Area Medical event, Lee County

September 27-28: Central Baptist Church, Greeneville

October 5: Remote Area Medical Event at Veterans’ Stand Down, Johnson City
