From staff reports • Nov 10, 2018 at 11:32 PM

KINGSPORT — The Kingsport Police Department is investigating a two-vehicle collision in Colonial Heights that claimed the life of a city man Saturday afternoon.

At approximately 3:30, KPD patrol officers responded to the incident on Fort Henry Drive. Due to the seriousness of the crash and the injuries sustained, the Traffic Unit was summoned to the scene.

According to KPD Public Information Officer Tom Patton, investigators determined that a blue 2003 Chevrolet Silverado pickup, driven by Tyler B. Cross, 31, Piney Flats, was southbound on Fort Henry Drive approaching the Green Hills Drive intersection. Meanwhile, a black 1998 Silverado, driven by Rita L. Cline, 74, Kingsport, and occupied by one passenger, her husband, George W. Cline, 78, was northbound on Fort Henry Drive attempting a left turn onto Green Hills Drive.

The Clines’ truck pulled into the path of the other pickup, resulting in an angular collision between the two vehicles, rolled over and left the roadway before coming to rest on its top.

Cross was not injured in the crash; however, the couple were transported to a local hospital by Sullivan County EMS. Rita Cline was evaluated for possible injuries, but has been treated and released. George Cline succumbed to his injuries after arrival at the hospital.

Patton said that the crash remains under investigation by the Traffic Unit and possible charges are pending. He added that no additional information is available for release at this time.
