KINGSPORT — A Johnson City woman involved in a Sunday morning head-on collision on Interstate 26 has died from injuries sustained in the accident.

Margaret C. Buck, 47, died at approximately 9 p.m. Monday, the Kingsport Police Department announced Tuesday morning. Charges are pending and the crash remains the focus of an active investigation.

Shortly after 5 a.m. Sunday, a Mercedes C230 driven by Zachary Hunt, 23, Unicoi, struck head-on a Honda Accord driven by Buck. For unknown reasons, Hunt was driving the wrong way on I-26, heading eastbound in the westbound lanes, the KPD reports.

According to authorities, Hunt accessed I-26 via an exit ramp at the intersection of John B. Dennis Highway and Wilcox Drive.

Both Hunt and Buck were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Hunt sustained non-incapacitating injuries. The KPD is asking anyone who witnessed the Mercedes accessing the interstate or driving in the wrong direction to contact them at (423) 224-2750.

The crash caused the westbound lanes of I-26 to be closed for more than three hours.
