KINGSPORT — Expect to laugh a lot if you go see “Miss Nelson is Missing.”

“It’s such a cute story. Everyone will have the best time,” director Lorrie Anderson said of the Kingsport Theatre Guild’s production of the play, which opens Friday night.

“Miss Nelson is Missing” is based on the popular children’s book by Harry Allard.

WHAT’S THE PLAY ABOUT?

Anderson said the play is the story of Miss Nelson and her students. “Miss Nelson is a sweet person and she loves to teach. The problem is her kids don’t like being taught by her. They are loud and they don’t listen.”

Miss Nelson is worried that she won’t be able to get her students ready for an important test. Then, she goes missing.

Enter, Viola Swamp.

“She’s as close as you can get to being an actual witch,” Anderson said. Viola is hard on the students, giving them hours of homework each night.

“The kids immediately go search for Miss Nelson when they realize she might not come back,” Anderson said.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING WITH A YOUNG CAST?

“The casting of this show was harder than I ever thought it would be, and I am so proud of my cast that I really can’t even put it into words,” Anderson said. “To see kids at such a young age be willing to put their all into a show, my show, is so unbelievable. This kids have amazed me since day one. If you’ve ever doubted putting your child into a theatre program, do it. I promise they’ll thank you later.”

Anderson said she’s been inspired by the young actors. “I feel really fortunate to be a part of their theater life.”

The show dates are: Sept. 13, 14, 20, 21 at 7 p.m.; and Sept. 14, 15, 21, 22 at 2 p.m. in the Kingsport Renaissance Center auditorium. The school show is Sept. 20 at 10 a.m.
