Union’s Light, Lebanon’s Long among UVA Wise softball's nine-player signing class

WISE — Two local standouts are among nine players from four states who have signed on to play softball next spring at Virginia-Wise.

Union’s Brooke Light and Lebanon’s Kara Long are among the future Cavaliers softball players.

Light was an All-Mountain 7 District selection last year at shortstop and a member of the Times News All-Southwest Virginia team.

Long, who started three years at shortstop for the Lady Pioneers, was an All-Region 2D and All-Southwest District selection last year.

“We look forward to the opportunity to help them continue their growth as players and as student-athletes this fall,” UVA Wise coach Karen Bitter said Tuesday in a release.

The other signees are:

Jessica McNeill (Eastern Randolf, Ramseur, N.C.) — Batted .340 last season for the Wildcats, who went 25-7 in 2019.

Jenna McDermott (Middletown, Del.) — First-team all-conference pick and four-year all-academic team honoree.

Sarah Barrett (Gainesville, Ga.) — Three-time all-region pick at the 6A school.

Zariah Scales (Magna Vista, Va.) — First player in school history to be named all-state twice; batted .562 with seven home runs, 38 RBIs and 30 runs in 2019; All-Region 3D pick and Piedmont District co-player of the year last season.

Madison Milne (Woodgrove, Purcellville, Va.) — Led her team to the VHSL Class 4 championship in 2018 and a state runner-up finish in 2019.

Hailie Lamb (William Monroe, Stanardsville, Va.) — All-region and all-district in 2019 and 2018; posted a 9-1 record with 56 strikeouts in 2018.

Mady Buchanan (Staunton River, Moneta, Va.) — Two-year starter at third base; recorded a .387 on-base percentage in 2019.
