The new sidewalk will be bid as one project, but built in two phases. The first phase runs from Eastman Road to Stonebrook Place. The second phase picks up there and extends to Clinchfield Street, switching over to the north side of Stone Drive at Gibson Mill Road.
When this improvement project gets done, there’s going to be two lanes coming out of Indian Trail Drive – a dedicated right turn lane and a second lane for turning left or going across to the other side of Indian Trail.
A power outage took place along Stone Drive Thursday afternoon when a truck snagged a telephone cable at the Sullivan County Transfer Station. Nearly 700 customers were impacted, with most having their power restored in about an hour.
Currently, there’s two lanes on that side of Indian Trail, one coming in and one going out. At times, traffic can back up because one vehicle wants to turn left onto Stone Drive and those wanting to turn right have to wait.
Within the next few months, Kingsport plans to replace the copper wire at various intersections on Stone Drive with fiber optics. This will allow better communications between signals and hopefully reduce the amount of congestion during peak times of the day.
A power outage occurred Wednesday evening along Stone Drive, affecting more than 400 customers for several hours. A spokesman for AEP said the outage wasn’t due to the weather or a traffic accident.
“Big John” was built in 1954 by John Barker and stood in front of Barker’s “Honest John’s” gift shop, restaurant and gas station located on what is now Memorial Boulevard. When the state widened that road in 1959, Barker moved his business to Stone Drive.
KINGSPORT — A head-on Thursday morning collision on East Stone Drive killed a passenger in one vehicle, according to police, while the intoxicated driver of the other SUV ran from the scene and had to be chased down by officers.
The five-foot wide sidewalk will first run down the south side of Stone Drive, from American Way to Stonebrook Place. A second phase will extend the sidewalk from there to Lynn Garden Drive, transitioning to the north side of Stone Drive at Gibson Mill Road.
KINGSPORT — Motorists will soon have a smoother ride on Stone Drive. But first, you'll have to put up with a couple of months of rocky roads and lane closures. The work is required to take place Sunday through Thursday night, from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. with lane closures nightly.
KINGSPORT — Two miles of sidewalk is still coming to Stone Drive, although the expected start date of the project has been pushed back due to additional work to bring the walkway into compliance with the Americans with Disability Act.
Kingsport police say the driver experienced a life-threatening medical emergency before the crash.
